How to fix grammar in Gmail automatically
Gmail's built-in spelling and grammar checks underline mistakes and wait for you to click each one. If you'd rather have mistakes fixed for you before you hit Send, a browser extension can do it in place.
Steps
- Add Caret to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. There's no account to create.
- Open Gmail and click Compose, or reply to any email. If Gmail was already open, Caret starts on its own; if nothing happens, refresh the tab once.
- Write your email as usual and pause for about a second. Caret corrects the sentence you just wrote, in place.
- A small note shows what changed. Click Undo, or press Ctrl+Z, if you want your original back.

Good to know
- Caret fixes the email body. It leaves your signature, the To field and email addresses alone.
- It keeps your wording and tone. It fixes mistakes; it doesn't rewrite your email into formal English.
- It works the same in Gmail's pop-out and full-screen compose windows.
Questions
Does Gmail have automatic grammar correction?
Gmail suggests spelling and grammar corrections as underlines that you click to accept. It doesn't apply them on its own. A Chrome extension like Caret applies the fixes automatically after you pause typing.
Will Caret change the meaning of my email?
Caret only fixes grammar, spelling and punctuation. If a correction would change too many words, it leaves your text alone.
Does it work in the Gmail mobile app?
No. Caret is a Chrome extension, so it works in Gmail in a desktop browser: Chrome, Edge or Brave.
